Red Wine Headache - Sulfites, Histamines or ?
There was so much discussion after I posted John Kelly's article regarding sulfites, wines and headaches, I did some further research and wanted to pass the information along.
Red Wine Headache (RWH) is a well documented phenomenon. But there is no definitive information regarding RWH because there is no funding available for research. There is no evidence that sulfites are the cause of wine headaches. In fact, research done with subjects known to have sulfite allergies confirm that headaches are not one of the symptoms they experience when drinking wine. White wines often contain more sulfites than reds, and dried fruit contain sulfites and no one who eats either complains of headaches. So what is the culprit?
Some have suspected tannins, but tea, soy and chocolate have tannins and don't seem to be an issue.
Red wine has a lot more histamines than white, but there was a report in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology regarding a study of 16 people with an intolerance to wine, found no difference in reactions to low- and high-histamine wines.
Right now it looks like the cause may be prostaglandins, hormone like substances that may be responsible for the production of some types of pain and inflammation. A new study showed a distinct decrease in headaches in subjects prone to RWH and given prostaglandin inhibitors. In some non-controlled studies it looks like taking aspirin, which reduces prostaglandin production, may control or reduce RWH.
As I get more information I will post it and if any readers have any information please pass it along.

Muscadelle Muscadet Muscat (AKA Moscato) Continuing my theme of things that my brain sometimes can't keep straight, we have the three similar “;M”;'s. When I think of a lite wine to serve with some seafood in the summertime, often I'll think of of one of these –; but I often forget which is which. Muscadelle This is a grape. It is normally grown in Bordeaux, but not a lot is produced. I know it as the minor grape that supplies a little spice in the delicious Sauternes dessert wine
2007 Finger Lakes Weekend Wino Wine Awards- White Wines

When we last went to commercial break at The Finger Lakes Weekend Wino Wine Awards show, we had just announced the winners for Favorite Red Wines (click here to see the post for Favorite Finger Lakes Red Wines of 2007) and our host, Conan O’Brien was cracking bad jokes like "Men are like a fine wine. They begin as grapes, and it’s up to women to stomp the crap out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with." (Can‘t wait until the Hollywood writer‘s strike is over). R
A Wine Tour of New Mexico (Part 5)

The very last day of winery visits. We’re coming to the end of our trip at a few wineries in northern New Mexico near Velarde and Dixon. We were hitting some noticeably cold weather about this time, and the temptation to break into the already purchased wine stash was high, but it was avoided by some of the tasty wines from these three wineries keeping us warm. Black Mesa Winery - Velarde, NM These guys like their pets a lot. There’s a humourous list posted in their tasting room listing the m
